Put on your ana bracelet and raise your skinny fist in solidarity!

I've got my red ana bracelet on today in solidarity in reaction to the news that 50% of the Olsen Twins are in treatment for anorexia. I guess it's actually slightly under 50%, huh?

There's something obsessive about our culture's relationship to anorexic bodies. We can see it written on the skin as plainly as eye color and applaud, coax and reward its presence, air brushing away until we feel comfortable with a beauty we can pretend is natural. But when the woman in question enters treatment we erupt in a conflagration of giddy gossip and ridicule. It's almost as if our approbriation carries a certain caveat--that the source of one's "beauty" remain veiled, and therefore can appear natural and authentic. We punish those who crack the veneers we force upon them. The most popular images of Mary Kate Olsen will now and forever be the less-than-flattering images of her ultra-thinness...images of ghostly pallor and skeletal torsos. Whether her thinness is seen as an asset or as a source of spectacle hinges on whether the processes behind her weight are hidden or revealed. It's a source of endless speculation. We hate fat people, but laugh at them when they get their stomachs stapled. We've decided that full heads of hair and smooth bodies are the proper forms for men to take, but we want so desperately to pick off those who have to achieve it artificially.

In an odd conflux, did you catch Last Comic Standing last night? Bonnie MacFarlane tapped into our anorexia-obsessed arteries. "What's up with anorexics?...Aren't they HOT?"

It's a contradiction. The desired forms we want our bodies to take are beyond natural, yet we abohor the unnatural processes people are compelled to take to achieve these dream states.

Whether I'm shaving my shoulders in the shower, or you're waxing your chest, or she's eating cotton balls soaked in orange juice for dinner, we're all trying to regulate how we appear. We'd all like some tips on how to be thinner and more beautiful. Face it, you think it's true too: nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

Today, let's all wear our ana bracelets in solidarity.

Easy enough for a thin person to say. . . . Jason and Brian together might make one reasonable body.

Nevertheless, in the interest of humanizing the Olson twins, I offer these personal testimonies from the little minxes. They speak in the first person singular, but that doesn't really matter: we can them apart (Mary-Kate is the thin one):

I get extra time to take the test because of my ADD. Everybody's brains works differently and I just need longer for things to register.
*We've stayed really normal and down to Earth I think, and haven't let the success thing go to our head.
*We're lucky our parents didn't stereotype us, so we could figure out who we are for ourselves.
*I am very down to earth and practical I tend to dress sophisticted but conservative.
*We're normal teenagers -- except we travel more and we run a company.
*I like to go to parties where I know everyone. How are you going to have fun with people you don't know.
*Since we were 9 years old we've been seeing ourselves everywhere. We're so used to it, it doesn't really affect us.
*Well, eventually, when we're older . I think we're going to try to do things on our own maybe, I don't know. Maybe she directs and I act, or I act and she directs, and I think we'll always have some things going on together.
*I am a really bad test taker. I can get straight As In school, but I get nervous on test.
*Some twins feel like they need to compare themselves to each other, but we're not that way. That's because of my parents, though, and having six kids in the family.
*I am terrible at telling jokes.
*We are very wholesome and we don't go around flaunting everything . We're not really rebellious. We're not trying to be something that we're not.

Pathetic. It doesn't occur to chicer than thou theory fuckers to have any sympathy for two girls who've been exploited for their dollar value their entire lives. Nah, they deserve to be mocked, who cares if they're just barely 18 and have had any promise of redeeming value driven out of them by shallow capitalist opportunists. Haw, haw, she's got anoerexia and she has stupid opinions. Fun. What a couple of shallow assholes.

Artificiality is mocked because it flies in the face of the real thing that attracts people to the thin and beautiful - genes. What possible use can fat people who've starved themselves and waxed their backs be to the gene pool? Be real.

I have yet to decide whether I'm going to beat the shit out of you if I see you walking the streets of Seattle.

All I did was quote their own words, which is actually the best way to mock pretentious people. Right?

your negative comments dont help us. Its not as simple as eating a sandwich. If your going to say something, research it first. It affects us and your NOT helping. You dont understand and its people like YOU that make us feel so alone in this.

Yall....I dont understand why you would do that to yourselves...More so to keep it up...I'm not sure what the purpose of these messages are...are you promoting anorexia or are you trying to heal yourselves? Same with the ana bracelet....is that promoting anorexia..Please help me to understand whats going on. I'm not trying to bash what you are doing im just trying to understand.

The Bracelet is our way of letting eachother know who we are.... non ana's didn't know what it was untill it eas leaked. I'm very proud to wear mine when i've been good on my fasting. I fell I've earned the right to wear it.

Posted by: Tink at March 18, 2024 07:05 PM

"fasting" ..Anorexia is not fasting...it's starving yourself. I've read some of the peoples websites about Ana bracelets and their livestyles.. and There were quite a few whos goals were 68lbs...thats awewful.. Thats like someone saying that they dont think they'll look good till theyre 500lbs...either way VERY UNHEALTHY and deadly. I used to have a eating disorder and pushed myself close to death. Dont yall fear your lives? i know its a control thing i know your not happy until you are _X_lbs. But why?? Why keep it up and promote it to others?? yall know its not the way to go...Excersize...eat..but eat healthy... common now yall be safe take care of yourselves

I also do not understand this at all. I have been doing reserach on this for a class. I am so disturbed by
all of this, but I know that I can never understand ana because I am not ana. I am a woman and I do have issues with my body, and not everything I do is healthy, but I coudl never be driven to a disorder. I just want you all to know though that I am as supportinve as I can be. Be safe, and fight hard at this. Peace!
