Talking Turkey

A customer came into the co-op where I work today wanting to talk turkey. Specifically, the ratio of pounds of meat per person that she should use to determine the size of the bird she planned on purchasing. I told her about a pound, but it’s good to round up a little if she likes leftovers. As I walked away, the authority with which I had just spoken made me pause. It was automatic, the turkey-per-person equation I had produced for her. I could pull out different formulas if the meat in question was ham, duck, goose, or chicken.

When did I become some kind of hippie Julia Child?
