The twitch

I have developed a muscle twitch in my left eye.

Speaking to a colleague about it yesterday in her office (it was really starting to annoy me), I saw a flash of recognition cross her face. "Yes!" she said, "Of course you have one. It's from being an editor!"

Apparently, the eye twitch is a legendary ailment that befalls all editors. My colleague knew of at least four individuals at two different presses who all developed the twitches. It begins as an assistant and only gets worse as you move up to editor, she explained. And she herself had a twitch until she moved out of the department, Miraculously, her twitch went away.

Another editor entered the room and I asked him about potential remedies.

Drink more, he said.

I developed one of those last month and fortunately it went away during the holidays. But then the first day of the new year as I'm walking into work, my left lens randomly pops out -- the same eye that had just lost the twitch. I took it as an omen that my current job will eventually blind me.

Alternatively, you could use that tic as a metaphor for all of life, a la "All the King's Men" and its "Great Twitch."
