Why I Love the Golden Girls: Reason #376

From the IMDB:

Golden Girl Causes Terrorist Scare in Boston Golden Girls star Bea Arthur sparked a security scare at Boston's Logan International Airport earlier this week when she tried to board a flight with a pocketknife in her handbag. The actress, 81, was about to board a Cape Air flight when a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent discovered the offensive article in her belongings, which is strictly forbidden on airplanes since the September 11th attacks. A fellow passenger says, "She started yelling that it wasn't hers and said 'The terrorists put it there'. She kept yelling about the 'terrorists, the terrorists, the terrorists'." After the knife was confiscated by TSA officials, the funnywoman pulled out a key ring from her bag and told the agent it belonged to the "terrorists", before throwing it at them. As she boarded the plane, the Emmy-winning star told the TSA employees, "We're all doomed." A spokeswoman for Cape Air says, "Miss Arthur was cracking jokes and was a real character."

First of all, when did the funnywoman get so old? Second, could anyone else get away with throwing a key ring at a TSA agent? Had I been there, I would have been like, Chill, people! It's just Bea!

Thanks for the link, Richard.

I love bea - there, I said it. I'll join the ranks of aging and retail queens alike - fine! And I'll maintain my dignity, b/c that Bea has more moxie than a bus full of drag queens. I only wish I saw this whole thing play out, with her husky voice bellowing through the terminal. I'd be in fuckin' heaven.

How can Bea Arthur only be 81? I remember seeing her as Maude back in the late '30s.

Actually, she lies about her age. According to, her birthdate is May 13, 1926, which would make her 78, not 81. She may be the first actress in history to lie to make herself older.

The critic John Simon once described Bea Arthur as looking like a truck driver in drag, only less feminine.
